Hydration: The Key to Maintaining Urological Health

By Dr. Saumya Sapariya, Consultant Urologist, HCG Hospitals, Rajkot

Water is often called the elixir of life. And, our body is composed of 70% water which makes everything work better from bones to muscles. But we often underestimate its role in maintaining one of the body’s most vital systems called the urinary tract. Adequate hydration plays a foundational role in keeping the urological system healthy, functional, and free from disease.

Dehydration is caused due to climate, lifestyle, and dietary habits, it affects both brain and body. Therefore, the importance of drinking enough water cannot be overstated.

Importance of urinary system

Two kidneys, bladder, two ureters, and urethra make up the urological system. This is responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids from the blood and eliminating them through urine. The kidneys, which act as the body’s natural filters, rely heavily on water to flush out toxins, salts, and metabolic by-products.

Consequences of dehydration

When the body is dehydrated, urine becomes more concentrated, increasing the risk of several urological problems. Poor hydration is a key to urinary diseases. One of the most common urinary diseases is kidney stone formation. Concentrated urine contains minerals such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid to crystallize and form stones. And, regular adequate water intake dilutes these substances, reducing the probability of stone formation and recurrence.

Dehydration can also lead to renal hypertension or high blood pressure within kidneys, urinary tract infections (UTIs), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and bladder infection. So, drinking enough fluids increases urine output, which helps to wash off the bacteria out of the urinary tract before they can multiply and cause infection. Women and older adults are anatomically more prone to UTIs.

In men, hydration supports prostate health by ensuring smoother urinary flow and reducing strain during urination. Inadequate fluid intake may aggravate lower urinary tract symptoms, particularly in those with benign prostatic enlargement. Here, hydration may not be the cure but it can be considered an effective supportive measure. Chronic dehydration can irritate the bladder lining, leading to symptoms such as burning during urination, urgency, and frequency.

While water alone is not the solution to reverse kidney damage, consistent hydration supports kidney function by improving blood flow to the kidneys and aiding waste removal. However, individuals with advanced kidney disease should follow fluid guidelines advised by their doctor.

What does urine color convey?

The color of your urine speaks a lot about a person’s urinary health. When the urine colour is pale yellow, it suggests adequate hydration, while dark yellow or amber urine suggests dehydration. An adequately hydrated individual may urinate up to six – seven times a day, and that urine should be clear and straw-colored. Anything darker indicates lack of hydration. Some people believe white urine is safe but surprisingly it indicates overhydration.

Understanding the guideline for hydration

Does the popular saying “eight glasses a day” or roughly “2 litres of water daily” rule offer a rough guideline? No. Hydration needs vary depending on age, body weight, physical activity, climate, and health conditions. Water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, soups, can further support daily fluid intake needs.

People assume intake of sugary drinks, packaged juices, and caffeinated beverages also supports hydration. The fact is, they are diuretics, which means they flush water out of your body making you dehydrated. Also, one must not hurry in drinking water, make sure you drink it slowly throughout the day. Drinking more than a few ounces at a time flushes out your system, and the hydration benefits do not remain. The excess water intake diluted the electrolyte in your body leading to hyponatremia.

Reason for the increase in urological diseases

In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, people often ignore thirst cues due to long work hours, limited access to clean drinking water, or the thought of frequent urination leads to poor urinary health. Making hydration a conscious habit is absolutely important. Therefore, carry a water bottle, and set reminders to stay hydrated.

Hydration is not just about quenching thirst, it’s also about keeping your body hydrated and healthy. Because, the body needs water to perform necessary functions.
