Meesho Steps Up Fight Against Online Fraud with Project Vishwas

Ahmedabad 18 November 2024: Meesho, India’s only true e-commerce marketplace, unveiled the second edition of its ‘Trust Assurance Report’ today. The report delves into Meesho’s proactive measures and continued efforts to enhance security and user trust. By emphasizing on technological innovations, collaboration with industry experts, and implementing robust security measures, Meesho has earned a reputation as a secure and trustworthy e-commerce platform for its customers. As part of Project Vishwas, the company continues to invest in strengthening its dedicated ‘trust and safety’ team, focused on building and maintaining user trust on the platform.

By partnering with risk intelligence experts and bolstering its capabilities, the company remains poised to proactively tackle security threats in this dynamic landscape. In the last 12 months, Meesho has prevented over 2.2 crore fraudulent transactions. Additionally, Meesho undertook extensive steps to remove bad actors from the platform. The team has developed pioneering analytical models, sophisticated data science frameworks, and advanced computational logic. This has further helped prevent 13 lakh bot orders and has blocked 77 lakh scam attempts from accessing the platform.

Meesho collaborates closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure swift action against fraudulent activities. In a decisive effort against account takeover fraud, Meesho launched a proactive investigation that led to 9 FIRs being filed against over 40 suspects in Kolkata and Ranchi. By working closely with authorities, Meesho achieved an impressive 98% success rate in addressing account takeover fraud, highlighting its strong commitment to user protection and platform integrity. 

Lottery fraud has emerged as an industry wide challenge where fraudsters impersonate reputable brands to deceive unsuspecting individuals. To combat this, Meesho undertook comprehensive on-ground investigations in Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Ranchi, resulting in three FIRs against these fraudulent schemes. Since October 2023, Meesho has successfully reduced incidents of lottery fraud by 75%, showcasing its effective strategies and dedication to safeguarding users against such deceptive practices.

Meesho has made significant strides to swiftly support customers with fraud-related issues, maintaining their trust in the brand. To achieve this, Meesho established a Quick Response Team of 25 expert agents to provide rapid and effective solutions. This helpline, embedded directly in the app, ensures customers receive assistance within 5 minutes. To further protect users from malicious schemes, Meesho partnered with various threat intelligence platforms to take down over 18,000 fraudulent social media accounts and approximately 130 fake websites/apps that misused its brand for customer support, job portals, and lucky draws.

Meesho moved the Honourable High Court of Delhi for a permanent injunction against fraudsters operating dubious websites leveraging the Meesho brand. The court recognized Meesho as a ‘well-known mark’ and ordered domain registrars to deactivate these sites. It also directed law enforcement to investigate, freeze related bank accounts, and take appropriate punitive action.
