redBus Data Reveals 23% Surge in Travel in Gujarat During Independence Day–Janmashtami Long Weekend

GUJARAT, AHMEDABAD | 14th AUGUST 2025: With the Independence Day–Janmashtami weekend offering an extended break for many, Gujarat has recorded a 23% increase in bus bookings, as per data from the redBus platform. The surge points to an increasing inclination toward intercity bus travel during festive periods, influenced by factors like ease of access, quicker journeys, and better connectivity across the country.

Between August 5–18, 2025, Gujarat has witnessed an uptick in bookings compared to the same period last year, when the corresponding festive window spanned August 13–26, 2024. The city has emerged as one of India’s key departure hubs for Independence Day and Janmashtami travel, reinforcing its role as a major intercity transit point.

Travel Patterns and Preferences:

  • People travelling from small towns & villages (Tier 3) regions account for more than half (54%) of the total passengers indicating strong rural demand.
  • AC buses remained the preferred choice, contributing nearly 59% of total travel.
  • Sleeper buses account for 78% of total seats booked.

Demographics:

  • Female travellers accounted for 29% of total bookings, with over 52% representation from the young adult (21–35) age group.
  • Of all the women travelling in this time period, 35% are travelling alone.
  • Male travellers contributed 71% of total seats, with over 58% between the ages of 21–35.

The data highlights Gujarat’s continued prominence as a major intercity transit hub during key holidays, with a clear increase in demand for accessible and comfortable bus travel. With many travellers planning their trips closer to the date, redBus continues to support this shift with flexible and reliable transport options.
